This private historic vacation house is truly a Jewel in Volcano Village! Hi`iaka House is nestled among tall sheltering trees in the heart of Volcano Village.

Built in 1939, Hi'iaka House historically was used for a vacation home in an area where many families kept a country house. The Village was a cool spot in which to spend the summers. Play croquet on the rolling lawns or relax with a great massage.

 

Hi`iaka is the first part of the names of the twelve younger sisters of Pele, goddess of the Hawaiian volcanoes; the youngest and most famous was Hi`iaka i ka poli o Pele (Hi`iaka in the bosom of Pele); when stories are told of Pele and Hi`iaka, it is generally this sister to whom reference is made. Hi`iaka is pronounced 'hee-ee-ah-kah'. (The name hi`iaka is also given to a type of taro and also a type of sweet potato.) Why the house was named this is not known.

 

Beautiful artworks grace the walls of Hi'iaka House, which is comfortably and invitingly furnished. The spacious living room has a double size futon couch/bed.

 

Cuddle up in front of the Fireplace. There is a TV on cable, a VCR with videos to watch, and a music box with CDs and audio tapes to which to listen.

The kitchen is amply equipped, so you can cook meals and enjoy the view from the front porch.

 

Relax on the porch, a good place to sit with a cup of morning brew, while an apapane (Hawaiian bird) sings in the olapa tree.

 

The climate is that of an upland rainforest at about 3,700 feet. The landscaped grounds are abloom with camellias, azaleas, hydrangeas, ringed by bamboo, mature 'ohi'a trees, towering tsugi trees and dotted with the hapu'u ferns that also grace the understory of 'ohi'a forests in the Park.

 

There are three bedrooms, with queen-sized beds.

And a washer and dryer in the basement.
